Ellwood City was incorporated as a Borough on December 6, 1892. The town grew rapidly during the first half of the 20th Century as a manufacturing center for railroad car forgings, wire fencing, conveyors and seamless tubing. During the second half of the last century, the industrial base began to decline.

Today, Ellwood City Borough, with approximately 8,500 inhabitants, has become a fine residential community with light commercial, industry, and small businesses. Located between the Pennsylvania Turnpike, Interstate 79 and the Beaver Valley Expressway, the community has established good schools, a convenient local hospital, an established small town mainstreet/business district and quiet residential areas with a relatively low tax base.

Within the two and one-half mile Borough limits, there are numerous recreational facilities centered at Ewing and Stiefel Parks. Located only forty-five minutes from downtown Pittsburgh, Ellwood City offers a small town atmosphere with opportunities to enjoy cultural venues, top rate entertainment and professional sports events. Truly, Ellwood City is a nice place to call home!
