Population:

The 2000 Census shows the Borough of Ellwood City to have 8,688 residents, including over 3,500 home owners and 2,300 families.  The borough resides in the southern most portion of Lawrence County and accounts for approximately nine percent of the county's 94,000 plus population.  Factoring in adjacent boroughs and townships within a ten mile radius, Ellwood City and its surrounding communities comprise a population over 36,000, nearly forty percent of the Lawrence County population.

Ellwood City and its ten mile community radius population exceeds the population of Lawrence County's largest municipality, New Castle (26,309 pop.), an approximately 8 square mile large city located twenty miles north of Ellwood City.
 

Business:

The Borough of Ellwood City has seen its business scene transpire from the booming industrial tubing mills of the early 20th Century, to the popular steel milling industries during the middle of the century to a more modern industrial scene in the 21st Century.  Ellwood City still has manufacturers and industrial mills operating today, but more white-collar businesses have planted deep roots in the city for many years to come.

Operating on the original site, Ellwood City Forge has grown into a 340,000 sq. ft. facility housing world-class forging, heat treating, and machining operations. Known worldwide as an industry leader in the open-die forging industry, Ellwood City Forge manufactures concentric and eccentric contoured forgings and single cross-section products from carbon, alloy, stainless and tool steels in weights up to 80,000 lbs., lengths up to 50' and diameters to 90". Ellwood City Forge operates two production plants are located in Ellwood City and the other in New Castle Pennsylvania.

Ellwood Savings Bank (ESB):
Ellwood Savings Bank (ESB) corporate offices and bank are located in downtown Ellwood City on Lawrence Avenue.  The rapidly growing bank has opened branch offices all over Western Pennsylvania.

Eric Ryan Corporation, The:
The Eric Ryan Corporation is one of the nation's largest and well recognized utility and telecommunications auditing firms.  Corporate offices are located on Early Street with over 50 full-time employees.  Eric Ryan has been in business since 1990.

Hereaus:
The world´s leading supplier of expendable and semi-continuous measuring probes and instrumentation for molten metal control, Heraeus Electro-Nite has established an unrivalled reputation for quality and innovation.  Heraeus Electro-Nite currently employs more than 2,000 people in over 20 subsidiaries and affiliates. Headquarters are in Houthalen, Belgium. L&N Metallurgical Product Co. manufactures and sells expendable process control sensors for steel mills and foundries.

INMETCO:
INMETCO is the leading recycler of metal bearing wastes in North America. Every year thousands of tons of nickel, chromium, iron, molybdenum, and cadmium bearing wastes are recycled by INMETCO.

Nalco Company:
Nalco Company is the leading global provider of integrated water treatment and process improvement services, chemicals, and equipment programs for a variety of industrial and institutional customers. The products and services are used in water treatment applications to prevent corrosion, contamination, and the buildup of harmful deposits, or in production processes to enhance process efficiency and improve customers’ end products.
 

Housing:

With close-by Cranberry Township growing as one of the fastest townships in the entire country, Ellwood City offers a small town residential community for potential commuters.  An estimated median house/condo value for Ellwood City in 2005 was $94,500, an increase from $74,900 in 2000, easily more affordable than the six-figure housing rates of larger neighboring communities such as Cranberry Township.  With easy access to major state and interstate roads, Ellwood City is working towards becoming a bedroom community for surrounding areas.
